Wind and Watertight (WWT): Definition, Criteria, and Applications

The classification Wind and Watertight (WWT) refers to a widely used condition standard for secondhand shipping containers primarily utilized for stationary on-site storage. A WWT container guarantees that stored goods are fully protected from weather elements such as rain, snow, wind, and pests, though it typically no longer holds an active certification for international freight transport.

Key Criteria of a WWT Container

A container in WWT condition fulfills the essential baseline requirements for weatherproof storage:

  • Complete Weather Tightness: Walls, roof, and floor panels are free of holes and cracks. When the doors are closed, no daylight penetrates the interior (verified via standard “light test”).
  • Intact Door Gaskets: The surrounding rubber seals on the cargo doors fit tightly, preventing driving rain and drafts from entering.
  • Functional Locking Hardware: Doors open and close properly and can be reliably secured with padlocks or lockboxes.
  • Dry, Sound Floor: The plywood floor is solid, dry, and capable of supporting regular storage loads.
  • No valid CSC Plate: WWT containers typically have an expired CSC certification and cannot be loaded onto container vessels or standard commercial freight lines without recertification.

Common Wear and Cosmetic Imperfections

WWT is strictly a functional condition grade. Compared to newer or CSC-certified units, WWT containers routinely exhibit noticeable cosmetic and superficial wear:

  • Surface rust and weathering patina
  • Noticeable dents, dings, and scratches on corrugated side panels
  • Color variations from prior panel patches or weld repairs
  • Visible wear and surface markings on the wooden floor

Note: As long as these blemishes do not compromise structural weather tightness or baseline security, the container fully qualifies as WWT.
