Glossary: Cargo Worthy (CW)
Cargo Worthy (CW): Definition, Criteria, and Applications
The term Cargo Worthy (CW) refers to a standardized quality and condition grading for used shipping and freight containers. A container classified as “Cargo Worthy” meets all technical, structural, and safety requirements to be used in international maritime shipping as well as intermodal freight transport (rail/road).

Key Criteria of a Cargo Worthy Container
To achieve or maintain CW status, a container must pass strict inspection criteria in accordance with the CSC (International Convention for Safe Containers) and international inspection standards (such as IICL):
- Structural Integrity: Load-bearing components—including corner castings, corner posts, crossmembers, and the base frame—show no safety-critical deformations, cracks, or severe bends.
- Wind and Water Tight (WWT): Side panels, the roof, and door gaskets are fully intact. No light or moisture can penetrate into the interior.
- Fully Functional Doors & Locking Gear: Door leaves close flush, rubber gaskets are elastic and tight, and locking bars operate smoothly and can be properly sealed with security seals.
- Solid Wooden Flooring: The multi-ply plywood floor is load-bearing, dry, free of holes or major delamination, and withstands standard forklift axle loads.
- Eligible for CSC Certification: A CW container can be surveyed and approved by a certified inspector to receive a valid CSC safety approval plate for international transport.
This information is crucial to ensure that the container is operated within its technical limits.
Condition Overview: Comparing Container Grades
A common misconception is that a container without a valid CSC plate is automatically unusable.
That is not the case.
A container can still be technically fully suitable—for example, as a storage container.
The difference lies in the intended use:
| Classification | Structurally Approved for Export | Wind & Water Tight | CSC Certification Possible | Typischer Einsatzzweck |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IICL | Yes (highest used standard) | Yes | Yes | Leasing companies, demanding global round-trips |
| Cargo Worthy (CW) | Yes (fully transport-ready) | Yes | Yes (after survey) | One-way export (SOC), sea freight, intermodal transport |
| Wind & Water Tight (WWT) | No (storage only) | Yes | No | Stationary storage, on-site tool depot, material storage |
| As Is / Where Is | No | Often not guaranteed | No | Modification projects, scrap, basic shelters |
Typical Applications
- SOC Containers (Shipper Owned Containers): Ideal for exporters and freight forwarders shipping goods to regions where returning an empty container to the shipping line is uneconomical.
- Intermodal Freight Transport: Safe, seamless transport across road, rail, and inland waterways without needing to transload cargo.
- High-End Storage Solutions: For users who require not only wind and water tightness, but also maximum structural stability (e.g., for stacking or future relocation).
Visual Note:
Cargo Worthy is a functional, technical standard for used equipment. Cosmetic imperfections such as surface rust, minor dents, scratches, or paint patches are standard and do not affect the rating as long as structural stability and weather tightness are fully preserved.
